I clamber to my feet. ‘I’m really sorry, I’ve got to go.’

Holly frowns. ‘Why?’

‘My aunt wants me to help her in the shop.’

Holly stands up and looks at me, concerned. ‘Wait, are you OK about all this?’

‘Yes. Kind of. I think. It’s so much to take in, but I’m really glad I’ve got you to talk to about it.’

‘Me too.’ Holly hugs me. ‘I can’t believe I’m not going to see you now till after Christmas.’

I look at her in shock. ‘Your holiday!’ In all the drama of the last twenty-four hours, I’ve totally forgotten that Holly’s going away with her parents for Christmas. ‘When do you get back?’

Holly sighs. ‘New Year’s Eve. This is going to be the longest Christmas ever.’

‘Tell me about it.’

‘Just call or text me if you need to chat. I know when I first realised I freaked out.’

I nod. ‘Will do.’ I look up at the oak tree. Its huge branches stir slightly, like it’s waving at me.

Holly takes hold of both my hands. ‘Silver forever?’

I nod. ‘Silver forever.’ A jolt runs up my spine. It’s the same feeling I got when I confronted Izzy and the others outside Gym; a feeling of real power. And even though I should be really messed up by all of this I suddenly feel really good. I look at Holly and smile.
